Words, Part 1

Words are very powerful things.

They can encourage and they can discourage. They can heal and they can hurt. They can build up and they can tear down.

Proverbs 18:21 The tongue can bring death or life; those who love to talk will reap the consequences. (NLT)

I don’t think we realize just how much our words can (and do) impact others. Comments like, “I like what you’ve done with your hair” or “Good job on that assignment” can boost someone’s self-confidence and make them feel appreciated. But negative comments obviously tear people down.

From now on, think about how you can use your words to speak life into darkness, regret, despair, heart-ache, etc. It’s such a privilege to wake up every day with the potential to use our words to make someone’s day brighter, to show Jesus, to share Jesus, and to further God’s kingdom! Whether you talk to someone who’s obviously going through a tough time or whether you don’t know what’s going on in a person’s life, always speak life with your words. Always.

  1. And it’s not just words–moods and attitudes and little actions, especially the bad ones, can spread like a virus. I find that being polite and kind, just little things like holding the door for the person behind me, makes me feel better. Likewise, if someone let’s the door slam shut in my face–a get a little cranky for a moment.

Being nice. It makes you feel good.
